For Vancouver Whitecaps it is pretty much a must-win game. As the Caps take to the pitch at BC Place on Sunday against the worst club in Major League Soccers Western Conference, they know anything less than three points against Chivas USA will see their push for the playoffs hit a major roadblock. Its so tight in the Western Conference that the loss to LA Galaxy at BC Place last weekend saw the Whitecaps drop to seventh in the standings, when a win would have been enough to move up to second. While they will still not be far away from the playoff positions even if they lose on Sunday, the fact is they must make home advantage count. After Sundays game the Whitecaps will have eight matches remaining of which five will be on the road – and thats where the problem lies. The Whitecaps have been excellent at home this season, but have struggled to find a winning formula away from BC Place. If theyre to make the playoffs, they cant rely on going to Dallas, San Jose, Montreal, Seattle and Colorado, and picking up the points they will need. They can probably gain a few points on their travels, but not likely enough, and that puts massive pressure on the remaining home games. Saturdays loss against the defending champions LA Galaxy was a bitter blow because the Whitecaps actually played pretty well, especially in the second half. It was the same story when Philadelphia inflicted the Caps first home loss of the season in late July, when Vancouver had the better of the chances – despite being down to 10 men – but were unable to get anything out of the game. Against LA, the Whitecaps looked much more dangerous in the second half when they switched to a 4-4-2 formation. The 4-3-3 wasnt effective enough going forward in the first 45 minutes, with the Galaxys well organized defence difficult to break down. But after half time it was a different story when the Caps were able to use the width of the pitch and really stretch LA, carving out a number of excellent chances. If it wasnt for a world class save from Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, Vancouver would have taken at least a point. So now it is imperative that Martin Rennies men are able to make their chances count against Chivas on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how Rennie decides to fill the void left by Nigel Reo-Cokers suspension. I expect he will probably stick with the 4-3-3 formation despite finding success following the switch against LA. With Daigo Kobayashi struggling to influence games in an attacking midfield role, one option would be to move Kenny Miller into that position – a role he played in preseason. During the first half on Saturday, Matt Watson was deployed in a midfield role and while he brought athleticism and mobility to the midfield, he lacks the creative edge needed to break teams down. In the long term, the attacking midfield position is one the Whitecaps need to upgrade by looking elsewhere for help. I understand the search is well underway and although it is still in the very early stages, the club has already zeroed in on a target. The Whitecaps should be boosted by the return of their leading scorer Camilo on Sunday. He was on the bench against the Galaxy after missing training with an injury, but he should be available against Chivas. The Brazilians availability would make a big difference for the Caps who didnt see enough of an impact from his replacement Darren Mattocks against LA. When it came down to the final run-in last year, the Whitecaps limped over the line after a dramatic dip in form during the closing weeks of the season. Its now just one win in six for Vancouver, but they are playing much better than they were a year ago. They are more settled as a team and look much more capable of securing the results they need in order to qualify for the playoffs for a second straight season, but they must ensure Sundays match isnt another letdown. For once, the performance doesnt really matter – at home against Chivas USA, a win is the only acceptable outcome for a team with postseason aspirations. Stitched Oilers Jerseys . Sijsling, ranked 74th in the world, was leading 6-0, 4-1 when his Italian opponent called it quits after just 39 minutes on court. In a match pitting together two qualifiers, Michal Przysiezny of Poland defeated local favourite Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) for only his second Tour win of the season. Edmonton Oilers Pro Shop . "I wouldnt read anything into what happened Saturday at Torrey Pines," Woods said Tuesday after an 18-hole exhibition for past winners of the Dubai Desert Classic. https://www.cheapoilers.com/. The game was the first of two international friendlies that Canada is playing during the international break, with the second game against Slovenia set for Tuesday in Celje. Canada looked uncomfortable defensively throughout the game, and every free kick that came into Canadas penalty box looked like ending up in the back of the net. Oilers Jerseys China . Ronaldo failed to connect on an ample number of opportunities at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. But Karim Benzema and Jese Rodriguez scored in each half for Madrid to come out of the first leg with the firm advantage. Custom Edmonton Oilers Jerseys . Rodriguez, who has steadfastly denied using banned substances while with the New York Yankees, made the decision nearly four weeks after arbitrator Fredric Horowitz largely upheld the discipline issued last summer by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. "I think its a good move for him," former Commissioner Fay Vincent said. BOSTON -- Never one to take a lot of time between pitches, John Lackey had extra motivation to throw quickly and get out of the biting chill at Fenway Park. Lackey pitched eight solid innings with temperatures in the low 40s as the Boston Red Sox beat the slumping Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Tuesday night. "I try to work fast," Lackey said. "Especially when its cold, Im trying to get guys in the dugout. It wasnt a whole lot of fun out there on the field today." Lackeys teammates showed their appreciation with a five-run rally in the sixth as the Red Sox opened a three-game series with a win over their AL East rivals. Shane Victorino drove in his first two runs of the season while going 4 for 4, hiking his batting average from .133 to .316. Victorino was playing in his fourth game after missing the first 22 with a hamstring injury. He singled in his first two at-bats, hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and added an RBI double in the sixth. "We knew it was going to take a couple of games for him to get his feet on the ground," Boston manager John Farrell said. "He does give us a completely different dynamic in that 2-hole. When we can set the table for that middle of the order, weve got a chance to score some runs." Lackey (4-2) scattered six hits and allowed two runs, striking out five and walking one. After the Rays scored twice in the ninth, Koji Uehara came in and struck out Ben Zobrist on three pitches for his sixth save. Jackie Bradley Jr. had a pair of doubles and two RBIs as the Red Sox got 13 hits and won for the third time in four games. Xander Bogaerts was the only Boston starter without a hit. "It was good to see the evenness throughout the at-bats 1 through 9," Farrell said. The Rays lost for the seventh time in eight road games and are 4-9 away from home. Wil Myers had two hits and scored a run for the Rays. James Loney hit two doubles and joined Myers as the only Tampa Bay players with more than one hit. Both scored in the ninth on a throwing error by Bogaerts at shortstop. The Rays began the second leg of a 10-game road trip, which they started 1-3 in Chicago. Erik Bedard held Boston to one run through five innings, but the bullpen could not stop the Red Sox in the sixth. Tampa Bay manaager Joe Maddon said both starters had good command, but it was a tough night for relievers to sit through the frigid conditions and then have to pitch.dddddddddddd "Bedard was good. I thought Lackeys command was good tonight," Maddon said. "Its hard. Its hard for both sides. The game was not meant to be played in this kind of weather. But youve got to fight through it." Brandon Gomes (1-1) started the sixth inning and immediately walked Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes. Juan Carlos Oviedo took over with one out and fared no better. A.J. Pierzynski hit an RBI single, then Will Middlebrooks and Bradley hit back-to-back doubles. Bradleys shot to centre bounced off the wall in one of the deepest parts of Fenway Park, scoring Pierzynski and Middlebrooks easily. Bradley went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Victorinos ground-rule double. The Red Sox scored three more on three hits off Oviedo. Boston scored five times in the inning and sent nine batters to the plate. "Thats something that we normally dont do," Maddon said. "Were normally pretty good at minimizing damage. Weve got to do a better job of that." Bedard got his third no-decision in four starts. He allowed four hits, striking out four and walking three. Middlebrooks walked to start the fifth and went to third when Bradley doubled to centre. The Rays nearly got out of it when Dustin Pedroia lined out to third baseman Evan Longoria, who made a dive for the bag. Middlebrooks was diving in the other direction and barely beat the tag, then scored on Victorinos fly to centre to put Boston up 1-0. The Rays got the run back in the sixth when Desmond Jennings doubled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Longoria. Ryan Hanigans single in the seventh drove in Myers, who led off the inning with a double that was just a few feet left of being a homer to centre. NOTES: Napoli has reached base in 24 of 25 games this season. ... It was the 28th anniversary of Roger Clemens first 20-strikeout game for Boston, when he broke the major league record for a nine-inning game against Seattle. ...
