BELGRADE, Serbia -- Novak Djokovic has served many match-winning aces on the tennis court, but now he has fired a major one in the flood-hit Balkans. The worlds No. 2 tennis player has achieved what no politician has managed since the bloody Balkan wars in the 1990s: to at least temporarily reunite former bitter wartime foes as they jointly struggle against the regions worst flooding in more than a century. Djokovic has sparked worldwide financial and media support for victims of the massive river water surge that has killed at least 45 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia. The Serb has in the past triggered fury in the other former Yugoslav republics for what people considered nationalistic gestures, such as celebrating his victories with a three-finger victory sign that was used by Serb soldiers during their wartime campaigns in Croatia and Bosnia. What has set Djokovics flood salvage campaign apart is that he didnt just seek international support for Serbia. He also did it for Bosnia and Croatia which were at war with Serbia. All three states are still harbouring a deep mutual hatred and distrust, 20 years after the wars ended and the former Yugoslavia split up into seven different countries. "My heart is breaking when I see that so many people were evacuated and endangered in Bosnia! More than 950,000!!! Hold on brothers ... help will come from the world," Djokovic wrote on Twitter. "I also see that the east of Croatia is hit by floods ... I sincerely hope that it will not hit you like Serbia and Bosnia. Keep safe." "Long live the people of former Yugoslavia. Let God be with you," he wrote, adding a map of the former Yugoslavia with the flags of now different countries. The floods have triggered unprecedented regional solidarity in the Balkans, with the former Yugoslav countries sending rescue teams and humanitarian aid to each other over their borders. After beating top-ranked Rafael Nadal in the final of the Masters tournament in Rome on Sunday, Djokovic donated all the prize money -- about $500,000 -- to the flood victims. His charity foundation collected another $600,000. "There have not been floods like this in the existence of our people," Djokovic said. "It is a total catastrophe of biblical proportions. I dont really know how to describe it." Djokovics gestures triggered mostly positive public support in both Croatia and Bosnia. "Im not Djokovics supporter or like tennis," said Davor Buric, a university student in Zagreb, Croatian capital. "It is nice that he mentioned not only Serbia, but also Croatia and Bosnia. Djokovic has nothing to do with the war, and I have never heard him saying anything against other nationalities." In Bosnia, national football team coach Safet Susic said Djokovic had won "the support of the whole of Bosnia" with his campaign, and promised to support him in the upcoming Grand Slam tournaments -- the French Open and Wimbledon. Djokovic replied by saying he will support Bosnia at the World Cup in Brazil. Such sentiments in Bosnia and Croatia have prompted some commentators to nickname him "Marshal Djokovic" after Marshal Josip Broz Tito, the post World War II Yugoslav communist leader who managed to keep Yugoslavia united with iron fist. With his death in 1980, the country started unraveling along ethnic lines. "This water ... has destroyed what we have been building for the past 20 years," wrote prominent Croatian columnist and writer Vedrana Rudan in an ironic commentary on her web page. "Djokovic has sketched the map of Yugoslavia, he greets both our and his people ... the slaughter has separated us, the drowning has reunited us." In fact, it seemed as if their confidence soared. Andrew Luck answered by calmly picking apart the Chiefs defence, Donald Brown had touchdowns running and receiving, and the Colts didnt allow another point the rest of the way in a 23-7 victory Sunday that could turn into a preview of an AFC wild-card game. If Indianapolis ends up as the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and with the Chiefs assured of the fifth seed, the two teams would meet again in two weeks at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kansas Citys chances of winning the AFC West were dashed earlier Sunday when Denver beat Houston. "There was no panic," said the Colts Jerrell Freeman, who had two interceptions. "When they got that touchdown we were like, Aww, its OK. Its just execution, and us not trying to panic." Instead, it was the Chiefs (11-4) who looked as if they panicked. Alex Smith threw for 153 yards, but he fumbled once and was picked off twice. Knile Davis also fumbled the ball away, and the Chiefs were hit with several key penalties that scuttled any chance of mounting a second-half comeback in the frigid weather at Arrowhead Stadium. "Well see them again," Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "Theyve got the upper hand on us right now because in their minds they think they can beat us. If we go down there, it will be a different story. But weve got to fight our way back." The AFC South-champion Colts (10-5) have beaten the Chiefs in five of their last six games. Jamaal Charles ran for 106 yards and the games opening score, but Kansas City failed to keep him involved as the Colts scored the final 23 points. Luck finished with 241 yards passing, while Brown gashed a decent run defence despite working behind a patchwork offensive line. Adam Vinatieri also had three field goals for the Colts, who didnt commit a turnover. "Thats what coach (Chuck) Pagano has preached since Ive been with the club," Luck said. "Limit turnovers on offence and create turnovers on defence." Early on, the Chiefs appeared as if they were goinng to pick up right where they left off last week, when they hung 56 points on the Raiders.dddddddddddd They marched downfield on the opening drive, and Charles took a carry around the right side 31 yards for a touchdown. The Colts defence stiffened after that, though, and the closest Kansas City came to scoring again in the first half came when Ryan Succop yanked a 47-yard field goal wide left. "It was a team effort in not a very good way," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "You cant pull your foot off the accelerator when you get out that quick." Meanwhile, Indianapolis kept taking advantage of breakdowns in the Kansas City pass defence, the most glaring one coming after running back Knile Davis fumbled in the second quarter. Brown leaked out of the backfield unnoticed by the Kansas City defence, Luck hit him with a dump-off pass that he took virtually untouched 33 yards for a score. "I think they busted the coverage," Brown said, "so that made my job a lot easier." Browns job wasnt a whole lot tougher when the Colts got the ball back in the third quarter off Smiths interception. He raced through a gaping hole, then tight-rope walked down the sideline 51 yards for a score — a video review showed that he somehow stayed inbounds. Vinatieri added to the Colts cushion with his third field goal, capping a drive kept alive by a defensive hold and a taunting penalty after the Chiefs had already held on third down. Smith was picked off again by Freeman in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter, and then the quarterback fumbled the ball away with 3:24 left to seal the game. "The way we opened up, marching down the way we did, it felt like things were going to be the way theyve been," Smith said. "We really didnt get into a rhythm after that, didnt execute in any area, and then the turnovers. The turnovers hurt you." NOTES: Vinatieri has now scored 1,993 points, passing fellow kicker Jason Elam for seventh on the NFLs career list. ... Three of the Chiefs four losses have come at Arrowhead Stadium. ... Kansas City had scored 101 points the last two weeks. ... The Colts started their seventh offensive line combination and fifth in five games. ' ' '
